SignPlay: Learning Australian Sign Language Through Interactive Mobile Games

An 'AI for Good' initiative empowering hearing individuals to learn Australian Sign Language (Auslan) using AI driven Apps.

Australian Sign Language (Auslan) is one of the most important means of communication in our society, yet a significant barrier remains for hearing individuals, for instance parents and family members of Deaf kids, seeking to learn Auslan. At AID-LAB, we are committed to using AI for Good to bridge this gap. SignPlay is an interactive mobile platform designed to make learning Auslan accessible, engaging, and fun directly from a standard smartphone.

In proud partnership with Deaf Connect, Georgia Tech, and Google.org, we are developing cutting-edge AI models that can recognise signs through a phone's camera, providing learners with immediate, real-time feedback. To date, our efforts have collected over 246,000 data points, enabling our current model to achieve 81.1% accuracy across 2,000 distinct signs. By making sign language education more accessible to hearing people, we aim to break down communication barriers and foster a more inclusive community.
